In November 2016, Gulfport residents gathered west of the Gulfport Casino for the ribbon-cutting and inauguration of the completed beach, roadway and parking area renovations (Phase I, Shore Blvd Improvement Project, made possible by a Community Development Block Grant). Since completion of Phase I, parking conditions for beachgoers, downtown diners and Gulfport Casino visitors has improved significantly.
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is under the authority of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It is then managed and allocated locally by Pinellas County.
Resolution No. 2016-13 and Resolution No. 2016-74
With Phase I completed, the City of Gulfport quickly began project planning for Phase II of the Shore Boulevard Improvements -- the area east of the Casino. On February 16, 2016, City Council adopted Resolution No. 2016-13, "authorizing the City Manager to make application for CDBG funding for Phase II of the Shore Boulevard Improvements Project." Once again, CDBG confirmed that the Shore Boulevard Improvement Project met program criteria, and awarded Gulfport $300,000 for continuation of roadway, beach and parking improvements. Like Phase I, the City of Gulfport provides a matching amount of $300,000, made possible with funds from Penny for Pinellas and WRD Tax Increment Funds. On October 4, 2016, City Council adopted Resolution No. 2016-74, authorizing the City Manager to accept the CDBG grant and complete all steps required to execute the project. Below are some of the improvements covered under Phase II.
Re-Striping of On-Street Parking
Widening of Pavement
More Parking Spaces
Construction of a Boardwalk
New Landscaping Improvements
New Street Furnishings
New Light Fixture Installations
