Early 2016, I recommended that Gulfport seek a grant via “The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Program” to replace our closed skate board park. Accordingly, we held a “Special Council Meeting” on March 1, 2016, to discuss the proposal, seek public input and authorize the City Manager to submit the grant application in the amount of $62,500.00. If approved, the city will provide $62,500.00 in City matching funds. The LWCF Program, administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has notified us that our grant request has made the cut for potential funding.
We are currently updating the “Site Survey - Engineering/Design” to locate the skate board park at an existing (closed) playground at the Rec Center. It will not be replacing the current basketball court. The closed playground location is closer to the building, faces the beach and is adjacent to the newer playground. This should address noise concerns of nearby residents.
I very much look forward to seeing the skate board park coming to fruition at the Recreation Center where Gulfport youth enjoy a variety of activities all year long. Please see “my example” below with the skate park at the closed playground location (note: these are not official engineering designs).
