Earlier this year, the Pinellas Board of County Commissioners requested submission of ideas on how the County should use its $7.1 million Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill settlement funds. PCC surveys were developed and made available to the public (residents, local governments, organizations) in May and June of this year. I recommended at the April 19, 2016 City Council meeting that Gulfport consider submitting our "mooring field project" as an idea for County funding consideration (BP funds). It is my opinion that a mooring field fits within the County's objectives for "expenditures that have a substantial and visible community impact" and "support Pinellas’ economic and environmental sustainability..."
After getting more than 800 BP-funding ideas and conducting a July workshop, the BCC has developed a draft listing of potential projects to support. I am extremely pleased that our submitted project has made the cut thus far. Final BCC decisions are expected sometime during the fall. Please click on this link below for the complete list of project ideas under consideration (Gulfport's mooring field listed with the support of two Commissioners): http://www.pinellascounty.org/BPideas/pdf/BCC_BP_Ideas.pdf
Note: Although un-related to Gulfport and the mooring field, please see support by the BCC on a submitted Lincoln Cemetery project idea.
